This is how French, Actually handles your personal information: what we collect, why, who helps us, and what you can ask of us. It is written to be read, not skimmed.
Who we are
French, Actually is a trading name of WORKSJO LTD, a company registered in England & Wales (company no. 15824979) at 71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9JQ. We are the controller of the personal information described here and we are registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) under number ZB810612. For anything about your data, write to hello@frenchactually.com.
What we collect
When you book a conversation or apply
Your name, email address and, if you give it, your phone number; your timezone; where you live, if you tell us; what you tell us about your French and what you want it for; the programme you have in mind; and how you found us.
When you buy a programme
Your name, email address and phone number, the programme and the payment plan you chose. Your card details go straight to Stripe, our payment provider, over their secure page: we never see or store your card number. Stripe tells us whether a payment succeeded and gives us a reference for it.
While we work together
The dates of your sessions, the notes your coach keeps about what you are working on, and the emails between us.
Automatically
With your consent, analytics about how the site is used: the pages you visit, the device and browser you use, your rough location, and how you move around a page. Without your consent, we only count visits in a way that uses no cookies and no identifiers. Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs (IP address, time, page requested) for security, for a short period. See our cookie policy for the details.
Why we use it, and on what basis
UK data protection law asks us to have a lawful basis for each use. Ours are these.
- To run your booking, sessions and programme, and to send the emails that go with them (confirmations, reminders, schedule changes, receipts): performing our contract with you, or taking steps you asked for before it.
- To tell the coach and the studio about bookings and payments: our legitimate interest in running the studio.
- To keep accounting records: our legal obligations.
- To reply when you write to us: our legitimate interest in answering you.
- To measure how the site is used: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time from “Cookie settings” at the bottom of every page.
We do not send marketing emails. If that ever changes we will ask you first, and every such email will carry an unsubscribe link.
Who helps us
A few carefully chosen services process data on our behalf. Each gets only what it needs, under a contract that binds it to protect your information. We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it with anyone for their own marketing.

Where your data goes
Your information is stored in the United Kingdom and the European Union. Some of the services above process data in the United States. For those we rely on the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework where the provider is certified under it, and otherwise on the UK International Data Transfer Addendum together with the EU Standard Contractual Clauses. Members of our team may work from outside the United Kingdom; they reach the studio’s systems, which stay where described above, under our contract and the same safeguards.
How long we keep it
- Enquiries and bookings: three years after our last contact, so we recognise you if you come back.
- Programme records and session notes: three years after your programme ends.
- Payment records: six years after the end of the tax year they relate to, as UK tax law requires.
- Analytics: up to fourteen months in Google Analytics and thirteen months in Microsoft Clarity.
- Server logs: about thirty days.
Ask us to delete your information sooner and we will, unless the law requires us to keep part of it.
Your rights
You can ask us, at any time and free of charge, to:
- tell you what personal information we hold about you, and give you a copy;
- correct anything that is wrong or incomplete;
- delete your information;
- stop or limit a particular use of it;
- give you your information in a portable form;
- stop using it where we rely on our legitimate interests;
- withdraw a consent you gave, such as for analytics cookies.
We make no decisions about you by automated means. To exercise a right, email hello@frenchactually.com; we reply within one month. If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information you can complain to the ICO at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113. If you live in the European Union, you can also contact the data protection authority in your own country.
Security
The site is served over HTTPS, our database is encrypted at rest, and only the people who need it to run your programme can see your information, each with their own sign-in. Card payments are handled entirely by Stripe.
Children
Our programmes are for adults. We do not knowingly collect information about anyone under eighteen. If you think a child’s information has reached us, tell us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
When the wording changes, the date at the top changes with it. If a change matters to people who are learning with us, we will tell them by email.
