THE SHORT ANSWER

Choose one person and one topic. Ask a question you genuinely want answered, add something about yourself and ask for the missing context when you need it.

Give yourself an easy opening

Food, a recent trip or a photograph gives you something concrete to ask about. A specific question gives the other person a clear starting point.

Ask for the story behind the story

Attends, c’est qui, Paul ?

“Wait, who is Paul?” For an informal conversation where you use tu. Ask for context, not a translation of everything.

Ça s’est passé quand ?

“When did that happen?” A short follow-up question helps you locate the story.

“I’m still finding my words, but I’d like to try” tells the family what you want to do next.

See one way to say it

Ah oui ? Qu’est-ce que vous avez fait là-bas ?

“Oh yes? What did you do there?” With someone you address as tu: Qu’est-ce que tu as fait là-bas ? With a group, vous is also the plural “you”.

Agree on a little help beforehand

Tell your partner what helps: explaining who someone is, giving you a moment to answer or bringing you into a familiar topic. Taking a break from a busy conversation is fine. Explore practice for family situations.
