How the test works

It finds your level as you answer
Each answer moves the estimate, and the next question is picked to test it: harder after a right answer, easier after a miss. Twenty questions place you better than fifty fixed ones.

Four kinds of question
Grammar, vocabulary, short real texts, and the French people actually say in shops, offices and messages. Speaking you rate yourself at the end, in five quick statements.

The bank holds 75 questions: 29 grammar, 20 vocabulary, 11 reading, 15 real-life French. Each test draws twenty of them, so two people rarely see the same test, and taking it again gives you mostly new questions.
The levels, in plain words
A1
Beginner · Débutant
You can manage the very first exchanges, slowly, with a patient listener.
Introduce yourself and ask simple questions. Read short signs, menus and messages. Order in a café and ask for the bill.

A2
Elementary · Élémentaire
Everyday French works for you when the situation is familiar and nobody rushes you.
Handle shops, transport and appointments. Understand short messages and notices. Talk about your work, your family and your weekend in simple sentences.
150 to 200 hoursfrom zero, indicative
B1
Intermediate · Intermédiaire
You can hold a real conversation on familiar topics, even if you search for words.
Follow the main points of a clear conversation. Deal with most situations when travelling or living in France. Explain an opinion or a plan, briefly.
350 to 400 hoursfrom zero, indicative
B2
Upper intermediate · Avancé
You can talk with French speakers with some ease, including about work and ideas.
Take part in a meeting and defend a point of view. Read articles and follow most films. Write a clear, detailed email.
550 to 650 hoursfrom zero, indicative
C1
Advanced · Autonome
Your French is flexible and precise. What is left is polish.
Express yourself fluently without searching for words. Understand long, demanding texts and implicit meaning. Use French effectively at work and socially.
